SEO Heading Tags

Updated on July 16, 2013 by tabita

In the world of SEO, heading tags are one of the (not so) secret weapons. SEO heading tags help the search engines understand what the webpage is all about in addition to the title tag, image alt tags, and the URL (and the content of course!).

It’s especially important to place your keywords in the h1 tag. However, the other heading tags are important as well – if nothing else than for helping out with the readability of the page!

You wouldn’t want to read a newspaper article without headings, right? Organizing your content by using HTML headings makes a huge difference in a reader’s ability to scan the information. It’s a win-win!!

This short video tutorial explains what heading tags are and how you can optimize them for the search engines:

Hello and welcome to Gnome Tips. Today we’ll talk about heading tags and how they relate to SEO.

Heading tags are HTML tags. They define heading styles for use on your website. As you can see, there are six heading tags.

The h1 tag is typically the page header and the most important header for SEO.

The h2 tag is often used for sub-headings in an online article or blog post.

So why are headings important for SEO and how do you optimize them?

  • The heading is one of the signals to the search engines as to the topic of the webpage.
  • Make sure to include your keyword phrase in the h1 tag, and ideally in additional headings.
  • Sub-headings are great for usability. And great usability is good for SEO.
  • Just make sure to use headings responsibly. Don’t force keywords into your headings. They’ve got to make sense to your readers.
