Gnome Likes: Facebook and Local, Thought Leadership & Google Analytics SEO Reports

Updated on July 27, 2014 by tabita

Here at Web Gnomes, we stay on top of the ever-changing world of Internet Marketing so you don’t have to. We enjoy learning new tricks of the trade and putting them to practice in the work that we do for our esteemed clients. Here is some of the most helpful Internet marketing info we came across this week:

New Facebook: What It Means for Local Marketers

Facebook LogoWe’ve discussed a few implications of the recent – and upcoming – Facebook updates. This article from Mashable discusses the impact on local marketers.

First off, the article highlights the fact that local businesses typically have higher levels of engagement (up to 50 times!) than national companies. This a key point to remember when devising a social media strategy.

The two potential local benefits from the latest Facebook updates are:

  1. Customers can use the “Top Story” functionality on their favorite brands to make sure they don’t miss any important updates, like fun contests or events.
  2. The new Graphrank algorithm favors posts with a lot of engagement. And since local business posts often receive more activity, these posts are more likely to appear to users.
It’s a great time to be local!

The Best SEO, Social + Content Strategy: Thought Leadership

We always find useful information over at SEOmoz. This week, Rand Fishkin wrote about thought leadership and its role in marketing strategy. The key takeaway from this conversation-style post is that it is possible to become a thought leader in any niche, and it’s never too late to start. So if you have something unique to say – get it out there!

Webmaster Tools Search Queries data is now available in Google Analytics

There is much excitement in the Google Analytics nerd crowd these days. On Tuesday, Google announced on the Webmaster Central blog that three key Search Engine Optimization (SEO) reports are now available in Google Analytics:

  • Queries: Impressions, clicks, position, and CTR info for the top 1,000 daily queries
  • Landing Pages: Impressions, clicks, position, and CTR info for the top 1,000 daily landing pages
  • Geographical Summary: Impressions, clicks, and CTR by country

Before you can see these reports, you must link your site in Google Webmaster Tools to the corresponding web property in Google Analytics. Watch this short Gnome Tips video to learn how:

If you haven’t already, you also need to switch to the new version of Google Analytics (it is sweet!). You can do this by clicking the “New Version” link in the header. Enjoy!

Happy Friday and enjoy your weekend!
